Purpose & Building: How God Reveals Your Calling (And How to Walk in It)

May 02, 20266 min read

Sis, have you ever looked at your life, maybe after hitting a season where you felt completely lost, stuck, grieved, etc. and thought, "I’ve wasted too much time. I’m too far behind. God can’t possibly use me now"?

I’ve been there. I know that feeling of looking at the wreckage and wondering if your "purpose" was just a beautiful dream that got crushed in the gears of life. But here’s the truth I need you to grab hold of today: You had a purpose before anyone had an opinion. You were designed with a specific impact in mind before the world ever tried to tell you who you were supposed to be.

Your past hasn't disqualified you; it’s actually become part of the raw material God is using to build something incredible. Finding your calling isn't about "earning" your way back into God's good graces. It’s about uncovering the original blueprint He placed inside you.

God is creative, and He doesn’t speak to everyone in the same way. Whether you feel like you’re starting from scratch or just need a little gasoline on the fire of your faith, here are five ways God reveals your calling, and how you can start building a life aligned with His plan.

1. The Heart-Stirring: Compassion

When you see a specific group of people or a certain need in the world, what makes your heart skip a beat? What makes you say, "Someone should really do something about that"?

That "tug" is often the Holy Spirit nudging you. In the book of Isaiah, God called the prophet to bring comfort to those who were mourning and to provide for the oppressed (Isaiah 61:1-3). Isaiah didn't just stumble into that; he had a deep compassion for his people.

If you find yourself constantly drawn to helping women heal from trauma, or you have a heart for single moms, or you can’t stand to see people's potential go to waste, pay attention. What stirs you is often what God wants to use you to solve.

2. The "Oh, This?" Factor: Natural Gifting

Sometimes our gifts are so natural to us that we don’t even realize they’re gifts. We think, "Doesn't everyone know how to organize a room?" or "Doesn't everyone know how to encourage people like this?"

Spoiler alert: No, they don’t.

Think about King David. Before he was a king, he was a musician and a warrior. He was just doing what came naturally to him while tending sheep. But God used those very skills to bring him into the palace and eventually onto the throne (1 Samuel 16:13-23).

For years, I didn't think I had "talents" because I couldn't sing like a powerhouse or run like an athlete. But I could write. I could speak. I could see the gold in people when they only saw dirt. If you aren't sure what your gifts are, ask a trusted friend: "What is one thing I do that seems to help people most?" Their answer might surprise you.

3. The Original Blueprint: Childhood Dreams

I love this one because it’s so personal. Like Samuel in the Bible, God often places seeds of our future in our hearts when we are children. Think back: before life got complicated, before the "toxic cycles" took up all your energy: what did you love?

Were you the kid who was always "teaching" your stuffed animals? Were you the one organizing the neighborhood games? Every element of my calling today can be traced back to something I was interested in as a little girl. Those weren't just "games"; they were clues to my God-given design. God doesn't waste anything. He wants to reconnect you with that little girl’s joy.

4. Beauty from Ashes: Personal Struggle

This is where the "gasoline" comes in. For many of us, our calling grows directly out of our greatest pain. When you’ve overcome a toxic relationship, survived a season of depression, or rebuilt your life from the ground up, you possess a unique "authority" to speak into those same areas for others.

Look at the Apostle Paul. He started as a man who persecuted the church, but after his encounter with Jesus, that same zeal was redirected to build the church (Acts 9:1-19). He didn't hide his past; he used his testimony to show God’s power.

Your struggle isn't a secret to be ashamed of; it’s a platform for God's glory. The very thing the enemy used to try to destroy you is the very thing God will use to help someone else find freedom.

5. The Supernatural Nudge: Direct Revelation

God still speaks! Whether it’s through a persistent "inner witness," a dream that sticks with you, or a prophetic word from someone who doesn't even know your name, God can reveal your calling supernaturally.

When I first gave my life to Christ, it seemed like everywhere I turned, strangers were telling me the same things about my calling. It was God’s way of saying, "I see you, and I have a plan." Joseph had dreams of his future long before he ever saw them come to pass (Genesis 37:5-10). If God is giving you "nudge after nudge," stop doubting and start leaning in.

The Building Phase: From Discovery to Alignment

Once you start seeing the "ways" God is revealing your calling, the next question is: How do I build it?

Purpose isn't just a destination; it’s a way of living. It requires moving from just "surviving" into "stewarding" what God has given you. Building a life with God in real, practical ways looks like this:

  1. Steward the Small Stuff: You don't need a platform of thousands to start. If God called you to encourage, encourage the woman at the grocery store. If He called you to lead, lead your own heart well today.

  2. Establish Aligned Habits: You cannot build a God-centered life on "toxic-cycle" habits. Start your day with the Word. Use a tool like The Christian Dream Journal to capture what He’s saying to you.

  3. Find Your Community: You weren't meant to build alone. Surround yourself with women who are also in the "Becoming" phase. This is why we created the blog community: to give you the language and the truth to keep going.

Your Story Isn't Over

Sis, your calling is calling. It’s not about striving or trying to "prove" yourself to God. It’s about resting in the fact that He chose you, He equipped you, and He is with you.

Don’t settle for a life of "just getting by." You were made for more than survival. You were made for wholeness, healthy love, and an aligned life.
