Rebuilding Identity: Finding Your True Self in God’s Truth
Hey sis. Let’s have a real heart-to-heart for a second.
Have you ever looked in the mirror, not just to check your hair or see if you have spinach in your teeth, and felt like you didn't recognize the woman looking back? Maybe you’ve just come through a massive life transition. Maybe you just finished a long career, stepped into motherhood, or walked away from a situation that drained every ounce of "you" out of you.
In those moments, the question isn't just "What do I do now?" It’s deeper. It’s: "Who am I now?"
Rebuilding your identity is one of the most sacred journeys you’ll ever take. But here’s the thing, usually, when we try to "find ourselves," we look in all the wrong places. We look at our bank accounts, our relationship status, or how "productive" we’ve been today.
Today, I want to talk to you about God’s Truth. No, not the kind where you just tell yourself you’re pretty (though you are!). I’m talking about the grounded, biblical practice of shifting your gaze from the world’s distorted voices to the only truth that actually matters: how God sees you.
The Distorted Messages We Carry
We all walk around carrying messages about who we are that we’ve collected over the years. Some are given to us by our parents, some by our exes, some by our bosses, and some by the noisy world of social media.
The problem? Most of these messages are distorted, incomplete, or flat-out false.
If you’ve experienced trauma or a major life shift, your inner narrative might be telling you that you are "damaged goods," "not enough," or "invisible." If you’ve spent years people-pleasing, that internal script probably tells you that you only exist to make other people happy.
When we keep listening to these distorted messages, we start to believe the lies they tell us. We start to build our identity on a foundation of performance, pain, or temporary roles. But sis, you were never meant to be defined by what happened to you or even by what you do for others.

What is The Truth of the Word?
The Truth of the Word is the intentional practice of standing before God and asking Him to show you the truth. It’s about laying down those old, distorted messages and replacing them with God’s Truth.
James 1:23-25 reminds us that the Word of God reveals what is real. Instead of leaving us stuck in shame or confusion, God’s Truth shows us our design. It shows us who we were created to be before the world got its hands on us.
When I talk about The Truth of the Word, I’m talking about a daily rhythm of seeing yourself through the lens of Scripture. It’s saying, "I feel forgotten today, but God’s Truth says I am chosen." Or, "I feel like a failure, but God’s Truth says I am more than a conqueror."
It’s not about hype or pretending. It’s about agreeing with God, even before your feelings fully catch up.
If you’re in a season of transition, rebuilding, or quietly wondering if you’ve lost yourself somewhere along the way, this practice can help bring you back to what is true.
Shifting from Performance to Being
One of the biggest hurdles in rebuilding your identity is the "Performance Trap."
We live in a world that rewards doing. We get gold stars for being the best mom, the hardest worker, or the most "put together" woman in the room. So, naturally, when we lose a role or go through a transition, we feel like we’ve lost our value.
But your value is not a paycheck. It’s not a title. It’s not even your usefulness to God.
God doesn't love you because of what you do; He loves you because of whose you are. The shift from "doing" to "being" is where the real healing happens. It’s learning to sit at the feet of Jesus and realize that you are enough simply because He says so.
In our Sozo Journey to Wholeness, we dive deep into this. We learn that being "saved, healed, and delivered" means we are free to stop performing and start simply existing in His love.

Practical Steps: Walking in God’s Truth
So, how do we put this into practice in real life? Here are three simple steps to help you start rebuilding your identity today:
1. Do the "Whose Voice?" Audit
The next time you have a negative thought about yourself, pause and ask: "Whose voice is this?" Is this thought coming from God, or is it coming from a past mistake, an old wound, or somebody else's opinion? If it doesn’t sound like truth, grace, conviction, and love, it doesn’t belong to God. That thought may be familiar, but it doesn’t have to stay.
2. Create an Identity Journal or Identity Board
Spend time in the Word, not just to check off a box, but to remember who you are. Start an Identity Journal or an Identity Board where you document what God says about you in Scripture. Write down verses that anchor you when life feels shaky.
I am God’s masterpiece (Ephesians 2:10).
I am fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14).
I am a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17).
When your emotions are loud, this gives you somewhere solid to return.
3. Practice Speaking Life
This is the heart of walking in God’s Truth. Look yourself in the eyes and speak Scripture out loud. Not empty affirmations. Not wishful thinking. The Word. It might feel awkward at first, but there is power in hearing truth spoken over your own life. You are training your heart to come into agreement with what God has already said about you.
Rediscovering Purpose After Transition
Rebuilding your identity is the first step to stepping into your purpose. You can’t build a life you love if you don’t like: or know: the woman who’s building it.
Whether you are navigating the end of a relationship, the start of a new career, or just a season of "What’s next?", remember that you aren't starting over. You are becoming. You are shedding the layers of who everyone else said you were so that the real you: the one God dreamed up before the foundation of the world: can finally breathe.

You’re Not Doing This Alone
Sis, I know it feels heavy sometimes. I know it’s easier to just keep the mask on and keep performing. But there is so much peace waiting for you on the other side of this work.
